Fruit Loops Piss me off

Remain calm.

Everybody just take a breath.

Look people, the guy was blind shithouse nuts.

These days they tend to blame homicidal crazy on video games or movies or Satan worship.  When I was a kid they blamed Dungeons & Dragons, rock and roll or Satan worship.

I really don’t care what they discover about this guy.  It simply doesn’t matter if they discover he ritualistically rubbed one out every morning at dawn to Sarah Palin or had a bedroom festooned with Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter paraphernalia.  He did what he did because he was fucking crazy.  Sometimes life and death is precisely that random.  Get over it.  It sucks but get over it.

Sorry, it’s not Sarah Palin’s fault.

I reserve the right to advance the theory that she’s a stupid, albeit brilliantly opportunistic bitch but, can’t hang this one on Caribou Barbi.

The callow and feckless eruption by short attention span circus of 24 hour media to somehow define or even refute his actions based on some political calculus is just ridiculous.  Hinckley and Chapman were profoundly disturbed whack jobs and so is Jared Loughner.  It is what it is.

It’s our fault.

For being sheeple.  For being aloof.  For being oblivious.

Kinda.

The lesson here, the takeaway if you will, is that we have to figure out how to keep guns away from crazy fuckers.  And I dare anyone to justify for any regular citizen, much less an aspiring candidate for the booby hatch, to be able to purchase, possess and wield a goddamn Glock with a magazine of thirty rounds.    Shut up uncle F and cousin R or Ted Nugent, no one’s looking to compromise your often absurdly interpreted 2nd amendment rights.  That is, unless your certifiably insane.

We are the most thoroughly armed citizenry in the world.  90 guns for every hundred of us.  We kill more of each other and ourselves with guns and wound more of each other and ourselves with guns than anyone else.  We don’t let children play with matches but we consistently allow the obviously disturbed among us to compile virtual arsenals so that the arguably stable among us might have our own armories?  For what?  Fuck me.  This is unimaginably stupid.

And it keeps happening.  Over and over.

The hold that the gun lobby, the NRA, has over American policy is vulgar and despicable.  They prevent sensible regulation of any kind by scaring every gun hobbyist into thinking that the government wants their guns in order to be able to enslave them.  It’s a distraction and it’s a lie.  The war against us is being waged on an economic field that has no chance of being level, or fair, or commensurate, or equitable and so they are winning.  They count on guns and religion to be a distraction, a placebo, an opiate, for the genuine fuckery they are getting away with everyday.

Twenty two cents per bullet.  Per victim.

And it keeps happening.

Over and over.

Give it three to nine months and it will happen again.  Hold your breath, it could be next week.  It happens everyday fer fuck’s sake.  Maybe no one famous will be a target or die.  But people will lose their lives without ever seeing it coming.  Yup.  Count on it.  And count on the media to ask all the wrong questions and count on the rest of us throwing our hands up in dismay and horror.  Gobsmacked.  Count on it.  Count on war and man’s inhumanity to man.  No bookie in his right mind would ever lay odds on it.  No casino would ever get in on this action.  It’s as inevitable as death and taxes.

Maybe next time it will be political.  A mosque or an abortion doctor.  What’s the difference?  Anyone who would take it upon themselves to commit such an atrocity is mind bendingly absent any sense or decency.

Round and round she goes, where she stops, everyone knows.

Yeah yeah, if we severely restrict gun ownership then only criminals will have guns.  Bullshit.  We can do this and still let our half suspicious but still well intentioned relatives keep their stupid penis aggrandizing firesticks.

Humanity has never been a match for technology when it copulates with violence.

Look at it this way, we killed at least a hundred thousand innocent civilian Iraqis for no good reason whatsoever.

Context is a bitch.

How do we like us now?

What exactly is “crazy”?

Drinks for my friends.

I agree with some of this writing but I also disagree with a lot of it!It is a fact I know that the republicorps and all of the right want everyone including nuts and frootloops to have a gun,and will kill(with said guns)anyone against their so called 2nd amendment rights!I also agree that Sarah PAY-LIN is an opportunistic, idiotic, dumb as a donkey’s ass money hungry hateful and evil BITCH(I added a little more of my own vision of her)!I disagree that the so called “violent rhetorics” of the Witch from Wassila, including her despicable target pratice mark on the head of these democrats(Including Congresswoman Giffords)and her “Paisanos” Beck,Limbaugh,O’reilly and ALL of “Fucks” the virulent news Network, did not contribute to this carnage in arizona!IT DID!They and the tea-fuckers aka every hate group in America united ,have been professing and encouraging violence thru guns for over 2 years now!So when the culmination is this so called “Imbalanced” man shooting all these innocent people I lay the blame on the right and their repeated “calls to violence’!

    • Michael Douglass:

The evidence that he’s crazy overwhelms the lack of evidence that he was otherwise motivated. Get over it and learn to write a coherent sentence.

  • Agree with this, Michael, I really enjoy your writing. I do, however, think that we need to rise up against the rhetoric which comes under the guise of “news” and call it what it is. It’s hate speech, pure and simple, and maybe we can’t blame any one person for taking it literally, but it does absolutely nothing to unite our country, only serves to divide it, and that should never be accepted.

  • W. Thompson:

LEGAL access to guns has NOTHING to do with access to guns. IDC What country you are in…

And, YES! The Psycho did his own Dirty business….

But when it comes to scathing rhetoric, I think the Right Wing Nuts ‘win’….If I were Palin, I would feel pretty damn Bad about my Bullshit propaganda Map…………Especially if the Victim had called me out on it, previous to her attempted assassination….. (in April)

    How Embarrassing…..

I’d also like to Note that if an “ordinary” working “joe” had published a map with targets on it, and then someone got snuffed, …….well, needless to say, that ordinary Joe would have a whole lot of ‘splaining to do.

    • Michael Douglass:

Yup. It is thoroughly disgusting but it still is what it is and what it’s not. He’s a profoundly disturbed man. Nothing more or less. It’s a stupid mistake to politicize this either way.

  • TheFrankFactor:

To NOT politicize this and use the opportunity is a perfect way to stay down, and to assume the position. Fortunately more and more on the left don’t have the well meaning but misguided “values” to let the shit head Right keep dunking our heads in the tiolet. You’re dealing with people who play to win. The left better get its fucking head OUT of the toilet and stop bringing Mrs. Manners to a gang fight. Yeah, he is crazy. Well, let’s sit tight and wait patiently until some fuck credits Fox and Bernie Goldberg. Oh wait, they did. And look how the left rose up to rub their fuking noses in the shit that Fox spews… Oh wait again, now they didn’t. Bullies do’t respond well to sit downs. This article just helps to keep the left in its perpetual position as the loser.

  • Michael Douglass:

You spoil for a fight for the sake of a fight, not because it’s justified. Always a mistake. I don’t know about you but I’d like to believe I am who I am because I am of my own mind. My singular priority is the truth.

    My mind is my church.

To politicize such unfortunate circumstances is to willingly dine on carrion. It’s not just cheap and obvious, it’s disgusting. We are better than that. If we surrender to it, we have no ability much less reason to distinguish ourselves.

Should we fight harder and meaner? Absolutely. Absofuckinglutely. But if we don’t choose our battles wisely, with equal parts heart and head, we lose. If we lose, everybody loses. Innocent and corrupt, poor and downtrodden, rich and privileged. Everybody loses. It’s a burden to be the moral and ethical arbiter but that dye has been cast. It’s what separates us. We can never afford to play the equivalency game. If we fail to remain better, we don’t just fuck ourselves, we fuck everybody and the future.

I own intellectually that this asshole would have wreaked deadly havoc with or without right wing media and all it’s attendant hate and fuckery. What we should be talking about is the goddamn NRA and gun control. Therein lies your right wing red meat. Not the culpability of the Sarah Palins and Glenn Becks; they simply are not salient or germane to an intellectually honest dialog.

    You’re just dead wrong here.

This guy was fucking nuts. He should never been allowed access to any gun much less one with a magazine that held over thirty rounds. That is the salient point. The only one germane to the argument. All the rest is complete bullshit and I posit a direct, intended distraction. Obfuscation indeed.

It is entirely your prerogative to choose this as your fight but it’s stupid. There are plenty better conflicts. Our problem and your problem is that the wrong battle is consistently chosen. We are too easily distracted by this kind of crap. It’s too easy and not worth a damn thing once the shouting is over. We are smarter and better than this. It is the ONLY THING that makes us different and better. If the high ground is not to your liking then become a fucking Republican.

We spend far too much time screaming about dunces and not nearly enough time discussing the idiocy and idolatry of the goofcocks. You would have us argue this tragedy based on a vacuum of evidence. Stupid is as stupid does. Show me the connection. Show me where the overwhelming conclusion is anything other than he’s just a whackjob. There is no bumper sticker here.

There is a sensible case to be made for gun control and health care. That part of the iceberg is barely exposed and you would have us ignore it in favor of ridiculous jingoistic nonsense.

There is no “there” there in the way you want it to be.

“But what we can’t do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on one another.” -President Obama

    Dude, give me a break.

I could slurp a bowl of alphabet soup and crap a better argument than yours……………

    • I really liked your response about picking the right battles, Michael. I’m glad I read this because I sometimes really get off track in my thinking and wanna get down in the sand box myself. I enjoy your writing style very much, it’s thought provoking and darkly humorous as well. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  • reiya:

MICHAEL…,I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR OWN MEDIA EMPIRE. YOU ARE NIAVE. EVERYTIME A CRAZED INDIVIDUAL ACT’S OUT IN SOCIETY THE MEDIA BLAMES IT ON AN ASSUMED DIAGNOISES OF MENTAL ILLNESS. MORE THAN LIKELY THESE VIOLENT CRIMINALS ARE ON, OR HAVE SPORTED A LONG HISTORY WITH ILLIGAL DRUGS. WE NEVER HEAR ABOUT THAT. NEVER! SOMETHING, OR SOMEOME INFLUECED THIS YOUNG MAN TO GO ON A KILLING RAMPAGE. AND SOMETHING BESIDES THE FACT THAT HE WAS; AS THE MEDIA ASSUMES LONELY TRYING TO FIT IN. I THINK NOT. HIS OWN FRIEND STATED TO THE MEDIA, THAT HE WAS SEARCHING FOR AN IDENTITY, OR STRIVING TO BE INDIVIDUALISTIC.
REMEMBER PHIL SPECTOR. HAAaaaa. WHAT A TALENTED YET CRIMINALLY BENT INDIVIDUAL. DO YOU THINK HE TOY’D WITH HIS SHARE OF DRUGS? I DO.
I VOTE FOR PEACE, LIBERTY & JUSTICE. SO FAR OBAMA IS JUST NOT PERFORMING. DO WE HOLD OUR BREATH, AND TRUST THE WEALTHIEST AMONGST US TO VOTE FOR OBAMA, BECAUSE OF THE ABSURD TAX BREAK THEY WERE GRANTED. THE WEALTHY WILL JUST BY BIGGER CAR’S FANCIER IMPORTED ELECTRONICS, AND SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOLS. THIS CONTRIBUTES TO THE DIVIDE, HE PROPORTS TO HAVE DISTAIN FOR. AND THESE WAR’S ARE BOTH EXPENSIVE, AND HORRIBLY DESTRUCTIVE, I’M SURE MOST OF THE REST OF THE WORLD AGREES. OBAMA IS INCORRECTLY COUNTING ON US PROGRESSIVES, TO RUN TO HIM, SCARED OF THE RIGHT ,COME THE NEXT ELECTION. WOULD I BE A REPUBLICAN I WOULD BE FEELING VERY COMFORTABLE RIGHT NOW. WE FROM THE LEFT ARE SCARECELY BEING REPRESENTED. I HAVE A MIND OF MY OWN, AND I’M DISAPPOINTED, BIG TIME. SWEETSIE EATSIE COAT THE POLICITCAL HARMONY AND COMMING TOGETHER CRAP ALL YOU LIKE. I HAVE LITTLE IN COMMON WITH THE EXTREME RIGHT, AND KNOW LITTLE OF POLITICAL LEADERS, OUTSIDE OF OBAMA WHOM ARE WALKING DOWN THE MIDDLE. DO YOU?

    • Michael Douglass:

No, I’m not naive. I’m pragmatic. I’m a realist. You are naive in believing one man, even if he’s President of the United States, can save us. He can’t. I’m agnostic but have always admired the notion proffered by Christians that God helps them that help themselves. We are not engaged nearly enough and that is precisely why you don’t see the change you hoped for.

Feel free to lament the state of our union but don’t forget to look in the mirror.

And it’s indefensible to argue that this miserable fuck was anything but profoundly disturbed. The catalyst was mental malfunction, the impetus doesn’t really matter.

  • Linda BlueEyes:

Good article, but I don’t agree with all of it. I think it’s a mistake and a disservice to even SAY that people are blaming Sarah Palin, or anyone else, for what this guy did.
For the most part, that isn’t happening. Asserting the certainty that words have consequences and tend to resonate ESPECIALLY with people on the edge is something that NEEDS to be repeated until it stops being an accepted practice. That does not, however, equate to blaming those people for the crime.
In my opinion, that belief is just buying into what the right says and helping them to wrap themselves in the cloak of victimhood they always don. I see no need to act “the gentleman”, to make allowances, or to give the benefit of the doubt yet another time. It needs to stop.

The words put forth, especially in the past two years, are incendiary words, and the people that turn them into talking points for their fans know exactly what they’re doing. It’s a tried and true practice with historical significance.

It’s apples and oranges, but they BOTH belong in the fruit bowl.

  • robert dagg murphy:

Did you notice who got shot first? It wasn’t just anybody. It was a Jewish women congress person. Political! Of course the right wing nut jobs are responsible for this and many other acts of violence from not funding mental health to putting guns in every fools hands.20 thousand shot and killed this year, 200,000 wounded. Nothing is so invisible as the obvious.

  • Michael Douglass:

The Republicans on health care and gun control? Yes. The fact that she was Jewish? Or a congresswoman? Your oversimplification is breathtaking. See the comment above for cogent disagreement.
